Get Rid of Heartburn: Some Simple Tips

Over 70 million Americans suffer from heartburn at some point during a year. Heartburn typically starts with a “burning’ feeling in your chest. It is caused by excess stomach acid that makes its way up the esophagus. Heartburn is common after meals that are extremely fatty or acidic. It can also occur after drinking alcohol, smoking, taking medication or even eating chocolate. Sometimes heartburn can be a symptom of GERD (Gastroesophagel Reflux). GERD is when acids and digestive enzymes creep past the barrier that separates the stomach from the esophagus.
Most cases of heartburn or GERD can be easily corrected by antacids, such as: Tums, Rolaids or Maalox. Also, if you experience frequent heartburn, you could take certain over-the-counter drugs (Zantac, Pepcid) that block the production of acid before you eat. The following tips have helped many to easy their heartburn pain:
* Don’t smoke
* Avoid foods that are extremely hot or cold
* Eat slowly
* Don’t eat anything for at least an hour before bed
* Reduce chocolate intake
* Reduce stress levels
* Avoid/limit alcohol and caffeine
Heartburn can also worsen as you bend over or lie down. If you experience night time heartburn, use an extra pillow to prop your upper body up so excess acid stay in your stomach and doesn’t make it way up your esophagus.
