Eating a big meal or eating quickly also can trigger it. To avoid getting heartburn, try eating smaller portions, eat more slowly, and finish dinner at least 2 to 3 hours before going to bed, because lying down can allow more acids to move up into the esophagus. There are several over-the-counter medications available to treat heartburn, including antacids (Tums, Maalox, Rolaids), which neutralize stomach acids, and histamine-2 or H2 blockers (Pepcid AC and Zantac 75), which block acid production in the stomach. A newer family of heartburn drugs called proton pump inhibitors (Prilosec) that are also available over the counter work by blocking stomach acid secretion. Because the symptoms of heartburn can mimic those of a heart attack, get immediate medical help if you have chest pain that lasts more than a few minutes, or any other symptoms associated with a heart attack (nausea, dizziness, shortness of breath). See your doctor if your heartburn doesn’t respond to treatment, or if you notice blood in your stools (tarry or black stools), chest pain, choking, difficulty swallowing, or unexplained weight loss.

Following the announcement that Johnson & Johnson would acquire Pfizer Consumer Healthcare, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals entered into an agreement with Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer to acquire the U.S. rights to the over-the-counter Zantac product line for $509.5 million in cash.
Drug Store News caught up with Boehringer Ingelheim’s Patrick Hennig for his thoughts on Boehringer’s digestive property.
DrSN: What does the Zantac acquisition mean for Boehringer Ingelheim?
Hennig: Zantac is a great strategic fit that complements our existing OTC franchise in the United States. We now have two powerful brands–Zantac and Dulcolax–that compete in the two largest segments of the GI category–acid reducers and laxatives

DrSN: How would you characterize Zantac’s position in the marketplace?
Hennig: Zantac is a leading OTC brand competing successfully in a large and important retail category. Zantac has had strong consumption growth throughout 2005 and 2006 driven by the successful introduction of Zantac Maximum Strength, impactful advertising and promotional programs. We believe that Zantac has very positive consumer equity and a strong medical heritage.
DrSN: When will BI assume the marketing of Zantac?
Hennig: We assumed advertising and promotion responsibilities in January 2007 and hit the ground running. Right away, Zantac was being supported with national TV and radio advertising, couponing and value-added, special-pack programs.
DrSN: Does BI plan to keep the marketing expenditure on par with what Pfizer had historically committed to the brand, or will that marketing budget grow?
Hennig: Our vision for Zantac is to develop a strong and sustainable consumer brand. We are building upon and enhancing the programs that have been executed in the past…. Our focus right now is on a seamless transition for our retail partners and consumers. We are driving the business forward with a number of programs including national television and radio along with a variety of consumer promotion programs.

 Generic Equivalent of Zantac[R] Syrup
HAWTHORNE, N.Y. — Taro Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (”Taro,” Pink Sheets: TAROF) reported today that it has received tentative approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (”FDA”) for its Abbreviated New Drug Application for Ranitidine Syrup (Ranitidine Oral Solution USP), 15 mg/mL (”ranitidine syrup”).
Ranitidine syrup is a prescription product used for the treatment of ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, and other gastro-intestinal disorders. The FDA has determined that Taro’s ranitidine syrup is safe and effective for use when compared with the reference listed drug product, GlaxoSmithKline’s Zantac[R] Syrup, 15 mg/mL.

The tentative ANDA approval for Taro’s ranitidine syrup is an FDA determination that Taro’s ANDA submission for this product currently satisfies the substantive requirements for approval, subject to the expiration of all relevant patents or statutorily imposed exclusivities and restrictions (currently expected to occur during May 2009), or any new information that may come to the FDA’s attention. Tentative approvals do not grant marketing rights; a company may only market a product upon receiving final approval for an ANDA submission.
According to industry sources, Zantac[R] Syrup has annual U.S. sales of approximately $125 million. It is expected that when Taro receives final FDA approval of its ANDA, there will be additional generic competition for Zantac[R] Syrup.
Taro Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. is a multinational, science-based pharmaceutical company, dedicated to meeting the needs of its customers through the discovery, development, manufacturing and marketing of the highest quality healthcare products. Certain statements in this release are forward-looking statements within the meaning of the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995, including statements regarding Taro’s ranitidine syrup product. Although Taro Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. believes the expectations reflected in such forward-looking statements to be based on reasonable assumptions, it can give no assurance that its expectations will be attained. Factors that could cause actual results to differ include failure to receive final approval for Taro’s ANDA submission for ranitidine syrup; the granting of additional exclusivities or restrictions to Zantac[R] Syrup; industry and market conditions; slower than anticipated penetration of new markets; physician, pharmacist or patient acceptance of Taro’s ranitidine syrup; changes in the Company’s financial position; regulatory actions; and, other risks detailed from time to time in the Company’s SEC reports, including its Annual Reports on Form 20-F.

Is there really a heartburn reflux remedy that works better than antacids? Yes, and it actually cures your acid reflux permanently by healing two things, your esophagus and lower esophageal sphincter. And how can you get rid of heart burn naturally? By using a variety of therapies that include your diet, some lifestyle habits, some herbs and some simple remedies which all work to regrow tissue on the esophagus and strengthen the sphincter. The Problem with AntacidsWe’ve all used them… antacids! The problem behind antacids is they can cause calcium-based kidney stones, constant diarrhea, low blood pressure, breathing problems and even osteomalacia (bones becoming very brittle). And if you do not believe me, next time you purchase a box of antacids, look on the warning label. The antacids, Zantac, Prilosec, Pipcid AC and Tagamet all have warnings that say, “Do NOT take for more than 14 days.” The problem occurs when most people ignore the warning because acid reflux symptoms continue to persist. In fact, millions of sufferers report more serious symptoms because of overuse of antacids. Is there a better option than antacids? Would you consider a heartburn reflux remedy?5 Ways to Get Rid of Heart Burn NaturallySocrates said, ‘Let food be your medicine, and medicine be your food.’ And this is the idea behind natural health. Because natural health centers on giving the body the tools to cure the problem. In the case of acid reflux, here are 5 ways to get rid of heartburn naturally by healing the esophagus and sphincter.1. An Apple- Though there is a little research behind this remedy, this remedy has worked wonders for thousands of our customers. In fact, this remedy is the reason why my dad cured his acid reflux naturally. We recommend carrying a slice of apple in a baggie just in case of a flare-up.2. Honey- If you love honey you are going to love this! Honey has been labeled a ‘miracle cure’ by many and has even been documented as a cure 3,000 years ago. A tablespoon of honey is all you need, twice a day. Honey has been reported to stimulate the regrowth of tissue which is just what the esophagus and sphincter need.3. Your Diet- There are things you should eat and there are foods you should avoid! Your esophagus and sphincter are damaged if you have consistent acid reflux. And foods can either heal or hinder your heartburn. Here are some quick rules of thumb: avoid spicy and acidic foods, limit coffee, cut back on smoking, and consume softer foods if possible.4. Water- You should make it a habit to drink a glass of water after every meal. This will keep the sphincter clean which creates a tight seal on the stomach. Therefore, the gases and stomach acids will stay in the stomach and not travel up to the esophagus.5. Apple Cider Vinegar- Yuck! But it works in most cases! By drinking an ounce of apple cider vinegar, you can actually increase the acids in your stomach. The acids will be able to digest your food more quickly and this will keep food and stomach acid where it should be… your stomach. Adding honey and acid cider vinegar is also a helpful taste tip!Curing Heartburn in 24 Hours or LessIf you are serious about saying ‘good bye’ to your acid reflux forever, take a moment and visit our Heartburn Reflux Remedy Website.
